Most people around the world wash their hair once or twice a week, regardless of the season. However, experts say this hair-washing routine may not be suitable for the summer.
Dr. Pallavi Bradshaw, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at AXA Health Insurance, says that during the intense summer heat, it is necessary to wash your hair daily. While this may seem unnecessary to many, the expert emphasizes that it is extremely important for our health, according to the Daily Mail.
The issue is that pollen levels rise sharply in the summer, which can trigger severe allergic reactions, writes Focus. “Pollen can settle and stick not only to our clothes but also to our bodies and hair. Therefore, hay fever sufferers should take a shower, wash their hair thoroughly, and change clothes every time they return from outside,” says Bradshaw.
Most people who suffer from hay fever know they should stock up on antihistamines during the summer and stay indoors in case of a flare-up. However, not everyone realizes that during such ‘pollen bombs,’ the best thing to do is wash their hair daily.
“Taking a shower can reduce the risk of further irritation and help minimize the severity of symptoms. It’s better to take a lukewarm shower rather than a hot one to avoid drying out the skin, and hypoallergenic shampoos and soaps are recommended,” the expert adds.
This advice aligns with another expert’s recommendation, which advises against drying laundry and clothes outdoors during extreme heat.
“Hanging clothes, bed linens, or towels outside on days with high pollen counts is a sure way to get itchy eyes and stuffy noses. Wet laundry acts like a sponge, soaking up pollen. It settles into the fibers and sticks to the fabric as it dries, which means it ends up in your bed, closet, and on your skin,” says Nigel Bierman, founder of Daily Poppins.
He recommends drying laundry indoors, preferably near a window or in a well-ventilated area.
