The unknown disease that spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo and caused the deaths of dozens of people has been identified as a severe form of malaria, according to The Guardian, citing the country’s Ministry of Health.
“The secret has finally been revealed: it is a severe form of malaria, a widespread disease,” the ministry said. They also added that malnutrition has made the population of the southwestern province of Kwango, where the disease is prevalent, more vulnerable.
According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 592 cases of the disease have been recorded since October, with a death rate of 6.2 percent.
