Experts emphasize that the key to growing up healthy is to sit less and move more. However, the opposite trend has been observed recently, as children now spend most of their day in front of screens. This shift directly impacts their health, including their mental well-being.
They highlight numerous dangers associated with children spending excessive time in front of screens, including:
- Mental health issues
- Sleep disorders
- Vision deterioration
- Posture problems
- Communication and socialization difficulties
- Screen addiction
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following:
- Children under 18 months should not use gadgets or spend time in front of screens, except for brief video calls with close family members.
- Children aged 2 years and older should limit screen time to a maximum of 1 hour per day.
- For preschoolers, screen time should be limited, and it is recommended to watch together, engaging in discussions and explanations.
- All children, including teenagers, require adequate sleep—8 to 12 hours depending on their age. They should also have at least 1 hour of physical activity daily and time away from media (e.g., during family dinners, theater visits, or walks).
- Devices, including televisions, computers, and smartphones, should not be kept in children’s bedrooms during sleep.
Parents should limit not only their children’s screen time but also their own.
Remember, a parent’s behavior serves as the best example for their child. Experts explain: ‘A parent’s time spent in front of screens can have numerous negative effects on the child, including serious safety risks due to lack of attention. Excessive screen use by parents inevitably weakens the psycho-emotional connection with the child and fosters a sense of neglect in them.’
