In the UK, the £42 million Transform screening trial, which aims to revolutionize prostate cancer treatment, has been launched, The Guardian reports.
In the initial phase, which will begin in a few months, thousands of men will be involved. According to the organizers, hundreds of thousands of volunteers may be recruited over the coming years as the project progresses.
“The aim of Transform is clear,” said Dr. Matthew Hobbs, director of the Institute of Prostate Cancer Research UK. “We want to identify the most effective and least harmful methods for detecting prostate cancer at an early stage among adult men in the UK.
One in eight men in the UK develops prostate cancer, and around 12,000 men die from the disease each year. However, there is currently no screening service that can accurately detect prostate cancer at an early, treatable stage. Symptoms often appear only after the cancer has spread and become incurable.
