A new wave of COVID-19 cases has been recorded in Asia—particularly in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China and in Singapore, where there has been a sharp increase in infections. Bloomberg reported on the new wave of cases.
According to Bloomberg, the number of infections in the region has been rising for several months, regularly leading to new waves of the disease. Authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore are urging the public to get vaccinated again, with at-risk individuals encouraged to receive a second dose.
On May 13, Ou Jiazhong, head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection, warned on RTHK television about the ‘quite high level’ of new coronavirus cases. He said that Hong Kong recorded the highest number of cases last week since April 2024. He added that the number of people seeking medical attention and being hospitalized, as well as the level of the virus detected in wastewater, continues to rise.
As Bloomberg notes, Singapore—one of the region’s largest financial centers—is ‘on alert’ over a new wave of coronavirus cases. In May, the country’s Ministry of Health released updated COVID-19 statistics for the first time in a year. The report, which the agency states is published only in the event of ‘significant increases,’ noted that from April 27 to May 3, cases rose by 28% compared to the previous week, while hospitalizations increased by 30%. Authorities advised citizens to take precautions and wear masks in crowded places.
